DEDICATION

I l(' is an unselfish musician who lias not hidden his light under a

guide us in our search for the beautiful.

lb' is a dedicated teacher who has long shown genuine concern
for t be development ol all students — who stimulates our interest in the
realm of the aesthetic, and gives us a deeper knowledge of its place in
our lives.

lie is a sincere friend to both school and community, a man pos¬
sessed of sympathy, understanding, and a delightful sense of humor.

With gratitude and affection we dedicate
THE 1958 BLUESTOCKING

ACTIVITIES

STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION

LYDIA WOODS

President

Student Government on any college campus is viewed as a central part of
the educational process, both in the training that it gives to those students par¬
ticipating in it and in the contributions it makes to the institution’s educational
objectives. At Mary Baldwin, a student government has been in existence for
twenty-nine years and in that time has shown itself to be indispensable in the
college community.

Our Student Government Association has been active and dynamic primar¬
ily because of two factors. These are the character of the college administration,
which has maintained a full awareness of the value and importance of the asso¬
ciation, and the support of the students themselves, who have been vitally in¬
terested m realizing the goals a student government should declare for itself.
Without the interest of the two groups, no association would long remain ef¬
fective.

The governmental structure consists of three branches: the Student Board,
which is the central co-ordinating and legislative body; the House Presidents’
Council, which concerns itself mainly with the students’ problems of personal
adjustment as individuals and groups; and the Judiciary Board, the student
court, which constantly endeavors to instill the ideals of the Honor System in
the students.

The Student Government officers serving on these three branches represent
the student hodv in many capacities, and have as their goal the integration and
evaluation of the college program in every respect. They realize that the biggest
challenge to student government is that its job is a never-ending one. Its projects
and goals must be constantly broadened to meet the needs of new student genera¬
tions.

The broad objective of our Student Government Association is to encourage
the individual in the college community to develop her full potentialities. This
task is the challenge which we accept and try to meet to the best of our abilities.

The main duty of this organization is to sing for the chapel programs every

YOUNG WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION

ELIZABETH ANN WITHROW

President

I he Y.W.C.A. is the oldest student organization on the Mary Baldwin
campus, and is a member of the National Student Y.W.C.A. The Y was first
organized at Mary Baldwin in May 1894, and since that time has grown and
developed into an important religious organization on the campus.

Upon entrance into the college each student is encouraged to participate in
the activities of the Y.W.C.A. By providing a program of worship, study, and
action, the Y seeks to give every student an opportunity to put Christianity into
action.

This year the Y has begun a series of discussions led by a panel consisting
of faculty members and visitors, with topics concerning such subjects as “My
Personal Philosophy of Alcohol.”

Every Sunday evening there is Vesper Service which is led by students,
faculty, or visiting speakers ; each Thursday night there are short periods of
devotions in the dorms. Through projects in the community at VSDB, the Effie
Ann Johnson Day Nursery, and Western State Hospital one learns the meaning
of Christian Service. Peanut Week helps during that pre-exam slump. Get-
to-gethers throughout the year for various purposes aid in the integration of the
college community.

The highlight of every year is Religious Emphasis Week. This year Dr. I.
Wilson, the guest leader, stimulated discussion and interest among the students
with topics entitled, “In Favor with God and Man.”

MARY BALDWIN HONOR SOCIETY

The college honor society, organized by the faculty in 1932, recognizes and
encourages sound scholarship. A limited number of seniors are elected each May
to membership in the society. The annual meeting is held during the commence¬
ment season when newly elected members are initiated. Alumnae members are
incited to be present for this special meeting.

The graduates of the University Course of the Augusta Female Seminary
and Mary Baldwin Seminary were elected to the Honor Society in May, 1942,
in connection with the Centennial celebration of the school.

ALGERNON SYDNEY SULLIVAN AWARD

The New York Southern Soeiety and Mary Baldwin College have join!
I\ arranged for the presentation of two medallions at Commencement each
\ ear to those w ho, because of the quality ol their lives, are judged to be
appropriate recipients ol the award. \\ bile the award recognizes accom¬
plishment, unselfish service is the fundamental principle, as this was the
keynote of the life of Algernon Sydney Sullivan, whose name the award
1 tears.

Usually one medallion is presented to a member of the graduating
class and one to some other person who has interest in and association
with the College.

THE RECIPIENTS OF THE AWARD 1957 COMMENCEMENT

Julianne Rand

“Strong in her convictions, excellent in her
studies, outstanding in her leadership, her in¬
fluence has been fell in every area of campus
life. Endowed with an unusual sense of per¬
spective and proportion, she has made difficult
tasks seem less difficult, for to them she has
brought firmness of purpose and intelligence,
coupled with the wit and charm that are so
much a part of her. We honor her as a char¬
acter, as a leader, as a personality. In token
ot that honor, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan
medallion is awarded to Julianne Rand.”

Dr. Richard Potter

“Although a busy pastor and ecclesiastic, he
accepted the mandate of the Board of Trustees
m an hour of need and served the College
through his talents of leadership, counsel, and
encouragement. For an entire session he has
given this ministry without remuneration, be¬
cause of bis faith in higher education as an es¬
sential function of the Church, and because, as
a member of the Board, he had already found
place on his shoulders for the burdens of the
institution which confronts him through the
window of his study at the church.

“In conferring this award, the Faculty of
Mary Baldwin College expresses its gratitude
not only for the service of the year now con¬
cluding, but for the prospect of continuing coun¬
sel and help in all that relates to the well-being
of our college. The Algernon Sydney Sullivan
medallion is given with appreciation and affection
to Richard Randall Potter.”

RUSSELL SCHOLAR

i he Margarett Kable Russell Scholar is the recipient of an award estab¬
lished jointly m 1953 by the Board of Trustees and the Alumnae Association in
honor of the late Mrs. Russell, a trustee and an alumna of the college, it is
awarded to an upperclassman on the basis of academic attainment, high character
and quality of life, and sendee on the campus. It carries a monetary award
and certain academic privileges.

The choice of a student for this honor is made by election of the faculty.
Nominations are prepared by a committee of faculty members and representa¬
tives of the Alumnae Association, and two student members. A student’s quali¬
fications for this honor will ordinarily be considered at the end of her junior year.
No student will be eligible for reappointment.

“Because of her conscientious attitude toward all of her responsibilities, her
good academic record, her willingness to give herself generously to all phases of
the college program, and her constant devotion to the ideals of Mary Baldwin,
the Faculty has conferred the title of Russell Scholar for 1957-1958 upon Mar¬
garet Ann Clarke."

We of the 1958 Bluestock¬

easy to represent the activities

year’s publication neither adhers
to the design of the first Mary

too much to that of only a year

In 1899, the Literary Society of Mary Baldwin Seminary published a port-
iolio of classical reviews and news, the first Miscellany. As we look hack we
find these early issues provide an excellent record of student life and interests.
From that time the Miscellany has gradually evolved into a magazine containing
the best pieces of writing produced at Mary Baldwin; a collection of stories,
poems, essays, and articles on various subjects to entertain, to present new
ideas and new viewpoints.

In intermittent years the magazine has sponsored contests for students,
offering prizes for the best m poetry and prose.

ATHLETICS

RECREATION ASSOCIATION

MARGOT TEAGUE

President

rhe purpose of the Mary Baldwin Recreation Association reads from the
constitution as follows

“1 he purpose of this Association shall be to develop interest and participa¬
tion in a diversified program of recreational activities, to promote a spirit of
good sportsmanship, and to cultivate a spirit of co-operation and fellowship with¬
in the campus life.”

Almost all major and minor sports are offered in the R.A. program and
those who have never played are taught in order that they may improve their
playing and that they may also find enjoyment in sports.

Sportsmanship seems to be synonymous with athletics. Co-operation and
consideration for others are essential in both team and individual sports. The
Association plans the program with the primary emphasis upon enjoyable recrea¬
tion, and feels that participation, whether active or as a spectator, is more im¬
portant than the winning of a game.

The Recreation Association begins it> activities in the fall with the Fresh¬
man picnic at the hockey field. The Freshmen provide the entertainment by
presenting original skits that include everything from songs to football games
that portray Man- Baldwin College as a member of the Southern Conference.

The hockey season begins in September and lasts to November, weather
permitting. This year the Scotch team, under the leadership of Meryl Richard¬
son, and the Irish team under the leadership of [udv Norman, played in tourna¬
ments sponsored by the R.A. and in a tournament at Roanoke College.

Basketball games are played in the King Building during the month of
Februarv and the season is culminated by the basketball tournament. This year
a game was played with Hollins College.

The competition in tennis, volleyball, and recreational sports, is strong and
these sports are also represented by teams which enter tournaments.

The Recreation Association, besides sponsoring tournaments and promoting
team spirit, gives the college a taste of carnival life when presenting the R.A.
Carnival which is held even- other year. The King Building is transformed
into a midway complete with a floor covered with sawdust. The walls are lined
with booths and the “barkers” urge visitors to palm readings and skill games.

In Mav the Recreation Association activities reach their height in the R.A.
Banquet. At this banquet a trophy is presented to the clan with the best record
for the year.

1 he Dolphin Club (swimming club) of Mary Baldwin has a membership
of twenty-two girls, representing all of the classes. New members are approved
by active members who rate them on their performance of basic swimming
strokes and stunts. The program of the year consists of two tryouts for new
members, a “Splash Party” for Freshmen in the fall, and a swimming pageant,
presented in February.

The Pageant, “Around the World On a Dolphin,” was given on February
26 and 28. The members showed incidents that take place in eleven foreign
countries and the finale showed life in America.

FEATURES

COLLEGE MARSHALS

Left to Ri</ht: Betsy Sheetz, Carolyn Griffis, Martha Thulin.
Chief Marshal: Carolyn Griffis

The three main traits necessary in an usher or marshal are poise, courtesy,
and attractiveness. The College marshals and ushers, who reflect not only the
beauty of the student body but the grace and poise as well, serve at concerts and
at all other college functions.

AND USHERS

Left to Right: Penney Cox, Ann Coleman, Jane Reid, Mary Spainhour, Barbara Allan.

Not pictured: Barbara Judd.

I I oldi ntn' a position such as this is an honor, but also hard work. At many
important events, such as the King' Series, school plays, serious programs of
campus organizations, and commencement week-end, these girls always do their
best to please the students and guests of the college by seating them and aiding
in manv other small wavs to see that the function runs smoothly.

The Chief Marshal is elected by the student body from the rising junior
or senior class. The other marshals are chosen by their respective classes and
they, in turn, choose the ushers.

The business staff of the Bluestocking is proud to
present the following pages devoted to advertisements
by local firms that help make this publication possible.

We recommend Staunton to prospective students
and their families as an excellent place to shop, as
well as an excellent place for college. Staunton is the
hub of business activity in the thriving and beautiful
Shenandoah Valley, and has excellent stores, busi¬
ness firms, hotels and motels and service facilities.

Many of the firms have served Mary Baldwin stu¬
dents for generations, and have expert knowledge of
styles and prices that appeal to the Mary Baldwin
student. Students and visitors are invited to take ad¬
vantage of these facilities and to avoid the problem of
advance shopping and long distance shipment of lug¬
gage.
